Elliott has been nominated for 41 VMAs and won seven, including 2003’s Video of the Year award for her “Work It.” This has been a year filled with honors for the pioneering femcee.
This spring she earned an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music, and in June she became the first female hiphop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
She’s currently hard at work finalizing her first album in 14 years, and just teamed up with Lizzo for her “Tempo” music video last month. In addition to the award, MTV has also announced plans for a pop-up museum dedicated to the rap legend’s videography in New York City on August 24th and 25th before the VMA ceremony the following day.
